Here is a chapter in the story of Winnie the Pooh with which you may not be familiar with. In 1914, a small bear was born in Ontario, Canada. She was purchased for $20 by Lt. Harry Colebourne of The Fort Garry Horse, a Canadian cavalry regiment headed to the West From during World War I. Colebourne smuggled the bear into Great Britain as his regiment´s unofficial mascot. Here, the regiment´s veterinarian named her "Winnipeg," after his hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Before the regiment left for the front lines, the future of this particularly gentle cub had to be decided, and so she was given to the care of London Zoo. It was at London Zoo where a certain young boy fell in love with her - Christopher Robin, son to the English author A.A. Milne. Born from love and inspiration of "Winnipeg," Christopher Robin named his own teddy bear "Winnie." Our version of "Winnipeg" brings this beloved cub to life.
Made of finest mohair, black, 5-way jointed, surface washable, limited edition of 1,500 pieces worldwide, stuffed with synthetic filling material, with glass eyes, with gold-plated "Button in Ear".

"The true story of the world's most famous bear, Winnie!"
"An act of kindness-the adoption of a small bear cub-by a man predisposed to such acts was a catalyst for many remarkable stories. Winnie provided a welcome distraction as a mascot for the Canadian troops. Her personality caught the attention of the British people during a time of conflict and great uncertainty, and her calm temperament led a young boy to her. Winnie's unique characteristics and benevolent manner triggered the imagination of that boy and his father, and helped launch one of the most loved characters in fiction." - excerpt from Winnie the Bear
A true story, Winnie the Bear is the biography of a Canadian black bear named after the city of Winnipeg and adopted by Lieutenant Harry Colebourn, a kind veterinarian, who was en route overseas at the beginning of World War One. Colebourn nurtured the young cub at training camps in Valcartier, Quebec and on the Salisbury Plains.
Appleby takes us through Winnie and Harry's journey and through the story of her research, all the more fascinating for her family's connection to Harry Colebourn. Appleby's insights into the remarkable chain of events in Winnie the Bear's life reveal the bear's truly inspirational role in the creation of A.A. Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh books. |

Winnipeg artist P. R. Hayes created beautiful watercolour illustrations and pencil sketches, based on historic photographs, which accurately depict Harry Colebourn and Winnie the Bear, as well as the Milnes and E. H. Shepard

Winnie The Bear
by M.A. Appleby
About the Author
M. A. Appleby grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba and her summers were spent at a family cottage on an island on Lake of the Woods in Ontario, which is, by Canadian standards, not that far from Winnie the Bear's birthplace.
She completed her Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Winnipeg in 1980. Then in 1983 she moved to Detroit, where she completed a Master of Arts degree in clinical psychology and lived in Ann Arbor until she returned to Canada in 1989. M. A. has spent 27 years working in the field of clinical psychology.
When her father, a lifelong friend of Harry's son, the late Fred Colebourn, told her Harry Colebourn and Winnie's story she knew she would write this book. She and her family currently reside in the old Wolseley neighbourhood in the heart of Winnipeg. Winnie the Bear is her first book.
