MARGARET STRONG BEARS
The Margaret Strong bears are patterned after a 1904 Steiff
bear in the
After enjoying several years of being the most popular
pattern made by Steiff, the Margaret Strong bears have not been produced since
1999.
1982
Margaret Strong Gold (actually a "brassy" gold)
bears, shown above, are produced in five sizes; 26, 32, 42, 51, and 60cm. The
smallest has a squeaker; the other four have growlers. This bear was produced
until 1991. Many collectors look for the bears with the older ear tags, which
are numbered as 0155/26, 0155/32, 0155/42, 0155/51, and 0155/60 and say
"Made in
The Margaret Strong Gold bears have yellow ear tags.
1983
Margaret Strong Chocolate Brown Bears with Leather Paws are
produced. This is a boxed set of four bears, with white ear tags, and limited
to 2000 sets. Over the years, many of these sets have been broken up and the
bears sold individually. The sizes of the bears were 18, 26, 32, and 42cm.
These bears are numbered 016056/18, 0160/26, 0160/32, and 0160/42.
1984
Margaret Strong Cinnamon Bears with Leather Paws are
produced. This, too, was a boxed set of four bears, with white ear tags and
limited to 2000 sets. Again, the bears were 18, 26, 32, and 42cm. in size.
Their ear tag numbers are 0156/18, 0156/26, 0156/32, and 0156/42. Just as with
the Chocolate/Leather Paw sets, many of the
Cinnamon/Leather Paw sets were also broken up and the bears sold individually.
It is becoming increasingly difficult to find these bears in
their original boxes and complete.
1984
Margaret Strong Cream Bears are produced in the same five
sizes as the Margaret Strong Gold bears. These are yellow tag bears and they
were all discontinued after only two or three years of production. The 51cm.
and the 60cm. Cream are very hard to find because they were made in such small
quantities. It is estimated that only 1000 pieces were made in the 51cm. size,
and only 750 in the 60cm. size. The 60cm. size was introduced in 1985, and was
produced for only one year.
1985
Margaret Strong White Bears with Leather Paws are produced.
These bears have white ear tags and are limited to 2000 pieces of each size,
but they are not a boxed set. The three bears, sizes 25cm,.
31cm., and 41cm. are sold individually. Their ear tag
numbers are 0158/25, 0158/31, and 0158/41
In 1986, and fourth White with Leather Paw Bear is made. It
is 0158/50 and is limited to 750 pieces.
The Margaret Strong Gold Bears were produced in several
other sizes during the 1980's, for the American market only, and as dressed
bears. All of them, except the Margaret Strong Christmas Elf, come in
boxes.
